ok so huawei is back. kinda. not fully cuz no google but still. they dropped the mate 70 pro and honestly i was curious. like is it good or just hype?
i used it for like 10 days. maybe more. here’s everything i think. good things. bad things. everything.
first impression – looks expensive
when you open the box, first thing you notice. this phone looks PREMIUM. like really premium. not fake premium. real premium.
the back is some kind of frosted glass. feels smooth but not slippery. fingers dont leave marks easily. thats good. camera module is round this time. different from mate 60. looks kinda like a watch face. i like it.
phone comes with charger in box. yes charger. 100w. also a nice case. also usb cable. huawei still gives everything. respect for that.
but here’s the thing. phone is big. like really big. and heavy. not as heavy as xiaomi 15 ultra but close. around 220 grams. you feel it in hand.
display – beautiful but curved
screen is 6.82 inches. oled. 120hz refresh rate. colors are very good. like very very good. maybe best in any phone. huawei always does good displays.
brightness is high. under sunlight you can see everything. no problem.
but — and this is a big but — the screen is curved. like curved on both sides. some people like this. i dont. accidental touches happen alot. especially when you’re typing fast or watching videos. you touch the edge by mistake and phone does something random. annoying.
also screen has a small hole punch for camera. not notch. just one hole. looks clean.
120hz is smooth. scrolling feels nice. no lag.
performance – harmony os is different
so huawei doesnt use android anymore. they have harmony os. its like android but not exactly. most apps work but some dont. specially google apps.
gms (google mobile services) is NOT there. means no google play store. no youtube app (you can use web version). no google maps properly. no gmail app.
but huawei has their own app gallery. many apps are there. whatsapp, facebook, instagram, tiktok — all available. banking apps? depends on your bank. some work. some dont. you have to check.
for apps not in app gallery, you can use something called “petal search” or install apk manually. works but little extra work.
performance itself is good. very good actually. kirin 9100 chip (huawei’s own). not as fast as snapdragon 8 gen 4 but close. daily use is smooth. no lag. gaming is fine. cod mobile runs good. but heavy games like genshin impact? little less fps than snapdragon phones.
phone doesnt heat much. thats good. battery life is also good. more on that later.
camera – this is where huawei fights back
huawei used to be king of cameras. samsung and apple caught up. but mate 70 pro? huawei is trying to take back the crown.
rear cameras (three main ones)
main camera: 50mp with variable aperture. means you can change from f/1.4 to f/4.0 manually. f/1.4 gives more blur background. f/4.0 gives everything sharp. very useful actually. no other phone does this properly.
ultrawide camera: 40mp. good for landscapes and group photos. colors match main camera well.
periscope telephoto: 48mp with 5.5x optical zoom. upto 100x digital zoom. at 5.5x photos are very sharp. at 10x still good. at 30x ok. at 100x not useful.
photo quality
daytime photos are amazing. colors are natural but little punchy. hdr works very well. shadows and highlights both visible.
portrait mode is excellent. edge detection is perfect. background blur looks like dslr. seriously.
night time photos are also great. huawei’s night mode is one of the best. captures lot of light. noise is low. details are there.
but sometimes photos look little overprocessed. like too much sharpening. you can see if you zoom in. not a big problem for most people.
video recording
4k 60fps is smooth. stabilization is good. walking videos look steady.
there’s a special “xmage” mode for colors. gives very cinematic look. content creators will like this.
front camera
13mp ultrawide selfie camera. takes good selfies. skin tones look natural. not too smooth not too sharp. portrait mode on front works fine.

battery life and charging – excellent
battery is 5500mah. easily lasts full day. heavy use? maybe still full day. light use? one and half day.
charging is fast.
wired: 100w. 0 to 100% in around 30 minutes. not as fast as xiaomi but still very fast.
wireless: 80w. yes 80w wireless. thats insane. full charge wirelessly in 35-40 minutes.
reverse wireless: 20w. can charge earbuds or another phone.
huawei battery health technology is good. phone learns your usage and optimizes charging. says battery will be good for 4-5 years.
software deep dive (harmony os 5)
ok so harmony os is different. let me explain.
good things
- very smooth animations. feels fluid.
- super device feature. if you have huawei laptop, tablet, watch — everything connects easily.
- multitasking is good. floating windows work nice.
- customization is decent. themes, always on display, always on display.
- no bloatware. only huawei apps.
bad things (important)
- no google services. this is big. if you use google drive, google photos, google maps, youtube, gmail — all problematic.
- some apps dont work properly. even if you install apk, notifications might be delayed.
- no android auto. if you use in car, thats a problem.
- app gallery has less apps than play store. you will miss some.
who should buy? if you live in china, fine. outside china? only if you dont depend on google.
connectivity and network
huawei made their own antennas. claims better signal. honestly? yes. signal reception is very good. better than iphone for sure. wifi and bluetooth work fine.
5g works. but depends on your country and carrier.
no google location services so maps work but little slower sometimes.
fingerprint and face unlock
fingerprint sensor is under display. works fast. very fast. almost never fails.
face unlock also works. uses 3d tof sensor so secure. works in dark too.
you can use both together.
what i like (good points)
let me list quickly:
- build quality is amazing. feels premium.
- display colors are beautiful.
- camera is top tier. variable aperture is unique.
- battery life is excellent.
- charging speed is very fast (100w wired, 80w wireless).
- no bloatware.
- signal reception is strong.
- face unlock works in dark.
what i dont like (bad points)
honest list:
- no google services. biggest problem.
- curved screen causes accidental touches.
- app gallery has limited apps.
- notifications delayed for some apps.
- processor not as fast as snapdragon 8 gen 4.
- phone is big and heavy.
- updates? huawei gives updates but who knows for how long.
- resale value is low outside china.
who is this phone for?
honestly? not for everyone.
buy this phone if:
- you dont use google services much
- you live in china or asia where huawei ecosystem is strong
- you want best camera and dont care about google
- you like trying different phones
dont buy this phone if:
- you need google maps, gmail, youtube, drive
- you use android auto in car
- you want smooth app experience without workarounds
- you live in usa or europe (support is weak)

comparison with xiaomi 15 ultra
quick comparison cuz both are flagship.
| feature | huawei mate 70 pro | xiaomi 15 ultra |
|---|---|---|
| camera | variable aperture unique | 1 inch sensor better low light |
| no | yes full | |
| charging | 100w wired, 80w wireless | 120w wired, 50w wireless |
| software | harmony os (different) | hyperos (android) |
| screen | curved (accidental touches) | flat (better) |
| processor | kirin 9100 | snapdragon 8 gen 4 |
| google apps | problematic | works perfect |
xiaomi is better for most people. huawei only if you really want that variable aperture camera and dont need google.
final verdict
huawei mate 70 pro is a great phone. amazing camera. beautiful display. excellent battery. fast charging. premium build.
but.
no google services kills it for many people. outside china, its hard to recommend. you have to do workarounds for basic apps. some apps dont work properly. notifications delayed.
if huawei had google, this would be top 3 phone of 2026. but without google, its for enthusiasts only.
price is around 1200-1300 dollars. expensive. for that money, you can get xiaomi 15 ultra or samsung s25 ultra with full google support.
my rating: 7.5/10 (would be 9/10 with google)
should you buy?
if you ask me? no. unless you really hate google or live in china. go with xiaomi or samsung or oneplus. less headache.
but if you want something different and dont mind google missing, then yeah. camera alone might be worth it.
your choice boss.
my honest scores
- design: 8/10 (curved screen minus point)
- display: 9/10
- camera: 9/10
- performance: 8/10
- battery & charging: 9.5/10
- software: 6/10 (google problem)
- value for money: 6.5/10
overall: 8/10 (good phone but google issue is real)
